The Jakarta History Museum, known locally as Museum Fatahillah, occupies Batavia's former city hall (Stadhuis), completed in 1710 on today's Fatahillah Square in Kota Tua. It traces the city's story from prehistory through the Dutch colonial era to independence.

The Wayang Museum on Fatahillah Square in Kota Tua is dedicated to Indonesian puppetry, with more than 6,000 shadow, rod and other puppets from across the archipelago and abroad. It occupies a 1912 building on the site of Batavia's Old Dutch Church and reopened with bilingual interactive galleries in January 2025.

Museum MACAN (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara) opened in West Jakarta in November 2017 as the first museum in Indonesia to give public access to a major collection of modern and contemporary art from Indonesia and abroad. It stages rotating exhibitions in its galleries on Level M of AKR Tower.

Jakarta's museums cluster in two historic districts: Merdeka Square, home to the National Museum of Indonesia with its Hindu-Buddhist sculpture and Java Man fossils, and Kota Tua (Old Batavia), where the Jakarta History Museum, Wayang Museum and Fine Art and Ceramics Museum ring Fatahillah Square. Museum MACAN in West Jakarta adds modern and contemporary art from Indonesia and abroad.
Day 1: National Museum of Indonesia (from 8 AM; open until 8 PM Friday–Sunday) → Merdeka Square and Monas → evening in Menteng or around Jalan Sabang. Day 2: Kota Tua by KRL or TransJakarta Corridor 1 — Jakarta History Museum → Wayang Museum → Fine Art and Ceramics Museum; at weekends the Kota Tua museums stay open until 8 PM. Day 3: Museum MACAN in Kebon Jeruk (book a timed slot online; closed Mondays).
Tuesday to Friday mornings are calmest; the drier months (roughly May to September) make walking between Kota Tua sights easier. Weekend evenings are lively, with the Kota Tua city museums open until 8 PM on Saturdays and Sundays and the National Museum until 8 PM Friday to Sunday. Almost all major museums close on Mondays.

Plan Monday for markets, neighbourhood walks or the old harbour at Sunda Kelapa, and keep museums for Tuesday to Sunday.
Prices vary widely. The National Museum charges Rp50,000 for Indonesian adults and Rp150,000 for foreign visitors. The city-run Kota Tua museums, including the Jakarta History Museum and Wayang Museum, charge Rp10,000 on weekdays and Rp15,000 at weekends, or Rp50,000 for foreigners. Museum MACAN costs Rp88,000 on weekdays and Rp110,000 at weekends for adults.
Since May 2025 five city museums — the Jakarta History Museum, Wayang Museum, Fine Art and Ceramics Museum, Maritime Museum and Betawi Museum — stay open until 8 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. The National Museum of Indonesia is open until 8 PM from Friday to Sunday, and on the second Wednesday of each month its ARAMSA evening offers free entry from 4 to 8 PM.
TransJakarta Corridor 1 runs from the Monumen Nasional stop near the National Museum north to the Kota terminus beside Jakarta Kota station, a few minutes' walk from Fatahillah Square. Alternatively, take the KRL Commuter Line from Juanda to Jakarta Kota. The MRT does not yet reach Kota Tua, so riders change to TransJakarta at Bundaran HI.
